January 2023 Update

A warm hello to you from the refugeeEd team. <3

We hope you are having a great start to 2023!

Here is a snapshot of what we have been up to in January…

The refugeeEd team has changed. We said goodbye to our programme coordinator Emy who has moved on to a great new role in the sector with The Bike Project. Emy will be really missed but we wish Emy all the best in the new position! Taking over from Emy in the coordinator role is Ella, our newest team member - she first came to Greece as a volunteer teacher through refugeeEd in September 2021, so it is lovely to have her on the team again.

Ella says “I’m really enjoying getting to know the team and getting stuck into the amazing work here! I know that I have big shoes to fill, and I’m excited to continue to build on the great foundations that Emy has put in place”.

Our Community Teacher Training (CTT) Programme

We’re now coming to the end of the 6-week CTT course that has been run in collaboration with Movement on the Ground Samos and Northern Lights Aid in Kavala. It’s been great to see the dedication and enthusiasm of the trainees, and we’re excited to hear how their teaching practice continues to develop after the end of the programme.

We’re working on developing the mentorship programme to offer trainees who have completed the CTT course the opportunity to receive more specific input related to their context and individual teaching goals.

We are also enjoying preparing the training sessions planned for Salam LADC in Lebanon - stay tuned for our next update to hear how our first CTT programme outside of Greece has gone!

Our Capacity Building Programme

We have had a busy start to the year with lots of calls to potential volunteers, we have reached out to our network of over 25 organisations to check in and share our updates and services. Many who have requested support from us.

We have led two online workshops. One in partnership with OCC and their volunteers about identity and learning.

Another one available for everyone as an introduction to teaching in the refugee context, this was attended by over 25 people based in Greece, UK, Malta and Lebanon. We are so pleased to see so many people interested in developing their skills.

Our online workshop with OCC

We look forward to hosting lots more workshops over the coming months, the two below are available for anyone to attend and are to support people working with refugees in an education setting.

Trauma Informed Practice

Wednesday 1st March

16:00 GMT 18:00 EEST

We welcome our first volunteer of 2023 to Samos in February, we have already led an online induction and will keep checking in on their progress and provide updates on the work they are doing.

Lots of work is going on in the background creating and further developing our content for organisations in the migrant context. The team will visit Lesvos in March and lead a session for volunteer teachers working inside the camp there.

If you’d like to partner with us or you’d just like to chat about anything related to education - feel free to reach out to us at info@refugeeed.com!

With love,

The refugeeEd team
