During his time volunteering in Greece, it became obvious to Ed how essential specialised long-term volunteers are for grassroots organisations. He saw carpenters who had brought their skills and tools to camps to build structures for the residents, or qualified lawyers who could provide advice for new arrivals trying to navigate a foreign and confusing legal system.

Ed also saw the importance of trained, experienced teachers. When he was volunteering, he had some teaching experience, but this did not prepare him for the complex challenges: mixed ages, very mixed abilities and language skills, and the difficult behaviours of children who have experienced instability, trauma, and long periods of time out of education. Serving as a trustee at refugee allows Ed to do what he can to help promote educational opportunities for those who are trying to build a new life.

Ed oversees recruitment at refugeeEd, prides himself on taking comprehensive minutes, and has also been known to write an occasional whimsical tweet. He also has some personal experience of education; reading, writing, and teaching while doing a PhD in political theory.
